Wildfires Scorch Europe as Heatwaves Force Evacuations and Hospitalizations

Wildfires have erupted across multiple European countries, forcing thousands to flee their homes and overwhelming emergency services. The blazes, fueled by record-breaking heatwaves and prolonged drought, have affected Croatia, Germany, France, Greece, and the UK, with firefighters battling flames in tourist areas, forests, and rural communities. In Croatia, a wildfire engulfed the tourist town of Omis, hospitalizing 14 people, seven of whom were in life-threatening condition. Authorities reported 1,800 evacuees in western Germany after a fire spread near the Belgian border, while over 500 residents fled in France’s Landes region, where flames reached within 2 kilometers of a village center.

The situation worsened as temperatures soared, with France experiencing its driest year on record. In the UK, the West Midlands faced one of the most significant fire incidents in decades, with hundreds of homes damaged and a child and three firefighters hospitalized. Greece’s Halkidiki peninsula saw hundreds of tourists evacuated as wildfires threatened seaside resorts. Scientists linked the escalating fires to human-caused climate change, noting that Europe’s summer heat has been exacerbated by unusually dry conditions and limited infrastructure to cope with extreme temperatures.

Emergency responses included deploying hundreds of firefighters, aircraft, and military equipment to contain the blazes. In Croatia, local officials described the night as "extremely difficult," with flames spreading rapidly due to strong winds. Meanwhile, in Germany, smoke from the Gey district forced residents to flee, while in France, firefighters worked around the clock to protect communities near the Landes forest. The European Union reported that over 500,000 hectares of land had been scorched this summer, with heatwaves driving the crisis across multiple regions.
